Aum Sairam,
It was a hot summer afternoon in the year 2007 and it was a Thursday.
It was my habit to prepare Kheer (payasam) and offer to Baba as Naivedyam after pooja.
That afternoon I completed all my domestic chores and had to go out of home. So I took my scooter outside my gate, turned around to close the gate.
As I turned towards the scooter, I was shocked to see a six feet tall old man wearing a long Kurta and a short dhoti inside. He was very fair, radiant face, bright eyes and had long beard.
He looked exhausted and his face appeared red may be due to the sun’s heat.
He offered his pranam saying “Sairam”. I reciprocated similarly but did not understand how he knew I was Baba’s devotee.
I still was in a state of shock because the road was deserted and how could a person come to my gate in no time.
I recovered and looking at him asked him if he wanted water. He accepted to have some water.
I was reminded of Baba’s words – when any person comes to your doorstep in the afternoon time, offer him food and water.
So I asked the old man if he would wish to eat food. He agreed to have some curd rice. I plucked a plantain leaf and served him food in my living room.
From his appearance he looked like a Muslim fakir.
So I was a little hesitant as I thought I belonged to upper caste. In those days my devotion to Sai was still at in foundation stage. When I was still contemplating,
He offered parisheshanam ie, offering water around the food before it is eaten. Then he ate 3 pinches of rice with ghee, which is part of our culture. I was spell bound.
After finishing these practices, he told me his name, showed me his cross thread (janevu) and that he was a Brahmin from Bangalore.
I felt quite ashamed for giving room to such cheap thoughts.
He told me he lost his luggage while on his way from Tirupathi and needed money to buy his ticket back to Bangalore.
What puzzled me was, my house is quite far from station and it is not possible for him to stray. He could have gone to any other house for collecting his fare. Why did he choose mine?
After lunch, he appreciated the taste and blessed me with good health, peace and prosperity. I took his blessings and offered him some money as a part of the ticket cost.
He then left my house and went to another house (third house from mine).
They too were Sai devotees. While I saw him entering the house, I decided to tell the lady of the house to help him with some more money for his fare.
The cost of the ticket he said was Rs.108/- (baba’s no totalling to 9).
That lady too gave him the balance money and we exchanged good wishes and by then the old man had gone. He actually disappeared.
The distance between the house and the gate was more than 100 feet, he could not have gone out so soon.
Most interesting part of the miracle was, their dog did not bark seeing this stranger.
When I asked their watchman where the old man had gone, he drew a blank saying, he saw no one going into the house. I was speechless.
I took my scooter in search of the old man but in vain.
While leaving my house, he told me one thing, that I must never use my left hand to beat my son if ever I get angry.
He also asked me to hold to myself any anger or hatred I develop towards anyone. And that I must never use abusive words towards anyone or curse anyone.
They will become true. I have so far borne these things in mind and following.
Next day being Friday, My Sister in law (elder brother’s wife) worships Balatripurasundari.
It is a fact that the goddess enters her body and blesses us. But much to our surprise, that day, baba entered her body and sat in the Dwarakamai posture. Drawing me close ,
He said, he was happy I served him well yesterday. Until then I did not know that the old man was Baba himself. He asked me to have steadfast faith and single minded devotion towards him.
This leela I will remember upto the my last breath.
