It is difficult to decide to which tradition SAI BABA belongs to,

While Datta Tradition people say that He was one of the Five Dattas, He was one of the Five Nathas felt the Natha Tradition people.

The Five in Natha Panchakam are as follows:

Paramahansa Sheelanath

Gajanan Maharaj

Narsingh Maharaj (Gopal Das)

Madhav Nath Maharaj

Sai Baba (Shirdi)

Madhavnatha Maharaj was born on 26th March 1857 i.e on Chaitra Shukla Padyami. Left his mortal coil in 1936.

Madhavanatha Maharaj has given the life details of SAI Baba too.

He got Self Realisation (Brahma Jnan) at Mahasamadhi of Guptanath at Balaji Mandir.

Madhavnatha had given preference to Yoga and Nama Sankertana (Chanting of Lord’s Name). He had shown many miracles. He use to tell that mind and internal heart should be clear.

“He further says that none should give pain to others and if anyone causes pain to somebody it is equivalent to hurting me”. Once Madhavanath said to Sai devotee Mr. Rege that “ when you met Sai for the first time I was present there only”.

Means Great Men (Satpurushulu) keep meeting in subtle forms

Similarly they used to send messages through a third man.

Madhavanatha has sent Lakshman Rao to SAI BABA. Without telling the reason.

Only both could understand the reasons. ‘I was carrying bags of gold on the Donkey. Thieves robbed the gold. The Goldsmith has to pierce the ears. It was difficult to live in this world. Just tell this to Madhavanatha’ – message was thus sent by SAI BABA through Lakshmana Rao.

Madhavanatha had not expected any message to be sent by SAI BABA through Lakshmana Rao, hence he was not sent for bringing a message from SAI BABA.

Those brothers live like that.
