Shrimati Gokhale was staying in Dada Kelkar’s house for doing fasting in Shirdi for Three Days during the Holi Holidays.

SAIBABA asked her “What was the necessary to fast?” and advised her to cook puran polis in Kelkar’s house.

As Kelkar’s wife was under periods, she could not come and cook food for them.

That’s why SAIBABA has advised Mrs. Gokhale to cook at Kelkar’s house, she felt and followed the words of SAIBABA.

Not only to Smt. Gokhale alone, SAIBABA never allowed many to fast. The reason was people generally do not know how to fast.

Namadev was Panduranga’s Devotee. He used to fast Every Ekadashi. Panduranga advised Namadeva one should not fast on Ekadashi. But Namadeva did not agree for it, he wanted to fast.

That day was Ekadashi. Namadeva was fasting. One Brahmin has come to him and told him that he was hungry and asked him to serve meal.

Namadeva then replied that we do not cook today, take these fruits, saying this gave him some fruits. Then the Brahmin said, if I die with hunger, the sin will come to you. But Namadev said, I do not have relation with Sins and Virtues, if you die, I would also die said Namadev firmly.

The Brahmin then died. Namadeva was blamed by villagers that he was responsible for the Brahmin’s death. Namadev did not worry. Along with the body of the Brahmin, his body should also be put on pyre and requested all to burn him too.

This was known to the wife of Namadeva and she too asked them to make her sleep besides the body of her husband in the pyre and asked them to burn her too.

The fire was given to the pyre. The burns were spreading. The onlookers were astonished at the truthfulness of Namadeva and his wife’s suttee.

The burns were stopped. In place of Brahmin, there was Panduranga, Namadeva and his wife has prostrated before Panduranga.

Fasting does not mean to take the fruits and not to remain fruitless. With complete detachment, the person was to live with his God physically and mentally was the meaning of fasting.

Knowing this doing Upavasa (Fasting) was called Upavasa(Fasting). Or else this was only giving trouble to the body alone. That was why Panduramga and SAIBABA did not allow their devotee’s fasting.
